There has been an ongoing life event of collecting and caring for many dozens of four-leggeds, which has certainly influenced the subject matter I have chosen to portray. How could I resist painting the faces of these endearing creatures who have taken up residence in my heart? In addition, I experience much joy watching the interaction of dozens of varieties of birds at my feeders just outside my studio.
People almost always comment on the expressive eyes staring back at them in my paintings - so alive, so aware, so full of wonder. It's those eyes that draw the viewer in ... to strike a response ... to create an emotion. The eyes I paint have a human tendency.
Being able to make something utilizing my hands and my mind is what I look forward to almost everyday. The work I create needs to be fun and meaningful to me first and foremost - and if the viewer, by chance, finds a connection with my work - then that is the bonus - the grand prize.
I have loved doing many different things in my life to make a living - but being able to call myself an artist -
a painter - is a real honor. To have people respond to my work with a smile, chuckle, downright laughter or even a tear is why I show up to work.
